Protecting Social Security Numbers

For years, the University of Florida has actively limited and protected the personal identification information that it collects. Now, due to recent changes in Florida Law, Social Security Numbers may only be used in University systems, business forms and processes with special permission.
Do you know when and how to obtain permission to collect or use SSNs? Do you know how to protect the SSNs you have? If not, complete the training module below.

If you have already completed the training and know you qualify for an exemption, complete the request form here.

Training Module Instructions

Please read this entire page first before calling the Privacy Office!

This training module appears as a pop-up box. If you click below on Begin SSN Training and get sent back to this page, you may have a "Pop-Up Blocker" installed. Disable the blocker or use a different computer that allows pop-ups from this page. Speak to your computer support person, if necessary, for help.

Read the information on each slide. Click the NEXT button to proceed from slide to slide. Extra information may be viewed by placing your mouse over words underlined in blue.

Register at the End: Continue clicking NEXT until you reach the registration page. You must register to receive your Certificate of Completion. Print the certificate for your records. Completion of this training module is recorded by the Privacy Office in an electronic database. Go to the Certificate Lookup link in the menu to retrieve another copy of your certificate. Do not use apostrophes (') in any box on the registration page.

Browsers: The training is best accessed through Internet Explorer. It can work with other systems, but the slides will sometimes be distorted.

The module takes approximately 20 minutes and should be completed in one sitting. If you close the window before reaching the end, you will need to begin again.

Thank you for your participation. If you have any questions, please read this entire page first. Then, if you don't find the answer you need, contact Everall Peele, Privacy Training Coordinator (epeele@ufl.edu).
